Heard from the radio talk show today that more and more man are learning how to cook. More and more women are finding a partner's ability to cook as important as other attractive features (looks, personality, status, income, etc.)

Metrosexual:
Straight men who appreciates the finer things in life and enjoys making himself look good; be it through styling his hair or wearing fashionable clothes.

Gastrosexual:
Men who cook, taking the household chore part away from it, and turning it more into a hobby, used to impress friends and prospective partners.

There is a trend of increasing number of gastrosexuals. More men are not afraid to explore his artistic side and even feminine side through cooking. This is so true for me. I love to cook and cook for others! Since I can wipe up 3 dish and 1 soup for a meal, I expect my future partner be able to do the same. Sadly, many women turn away upon hearing this request. CryIn fact, increasing number of my male friends know/can cook. I think this is not a surprising trend...

Increasing number of career women working full-time has spur the trend of men moving into cooking. In the past, men are strongly discourage from cooking and even stepping into the kitchen. This is eminent in cultures like Peranakan and Korean. Men's position in the family is to work and provide a source of income for the family. This ensures a comfortable life. Women on the other hand ensures the smooth operation of the home. Men who cooks tend to be lazy and refuse to work. Hence, to ensure a stable source of income, women will chase men out of kitchen to work.

Modern society requires both partners to work. Woman have their jobs and build their own career path. This leaves little time for household chores and cooking. There is a saying that "the way to a man's heart is through his stomach." Since women nowadays don't (and can't) cook, men has to D.I.Y. We can't go on an empty stomach right? Modern women also like to be pampered after a day of hard work. Hence the ability to cook becomes one of an important features in men.

The report 'Emergence of the Gastrosexual' cites the popularity of superstar chefs Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver as a factor in making cooking a macho pursuit. Interestingly the findings indicate men's new found enthusiasm for the kitchen does not mean they are interested in other household chores. The cleaning of the home, washing of clothes and shopping for groceries are still forms of work dominated by women.

Professor Melanie Howard, an expert in social trends forecasting from the Henley Management College, mentioned: 'Being actively involved in cooking means that you're a good modern man playing your part in making the household run efficiently. Cooking is actually a more rewarding and creative form of domestic contribution.'

So men, let's take up our spatula and start cooking for love!
